it’s only a matter of time, average life is 4-5 years from my personal observation and many other sources. I’ll say it’s not a question of if a hard drive will fail, but when. Tl:dr I would not trust this drive with any important data until you try the “secure erase” option as a stress test Once you get everything off the drive, try repair disk again, it if passes this check and the issues continue then I still would strongly suspect hardware failure, I’ve been able to save or temporarily get working some drives after what you have described by choosing the “secure erase” option in disk utility, but more often than not the drive dies completely during this process and then you have your culprit. Checking for fsck process would only be applicable during the period between drive being plugged in and not mounting, it indicates there is a file system check being performed behind the scenes, it’s the same as if you choose “repair disk” thru disk utility. Not exactly, you’d go under the view menu in activity monitor to select “all processes” but if the drive is mounted then fsck would no longer be running. Is this correct? Should I just leave the harddrive untouched for a long time? I tried checking System Information and was able to see the drive connected via USB. It would appear for like a few seconds and then disappear for a while. I unplugged the external harddrive and plugged it back in and this time it's rarely showing up in Disk Utility. I feel like I may have made the situation worse. I have tried running First Aid when the drive appeared in disk utility, but this problem of mounting and unmounting still occurred. I was also able to see it in Disk Utility.
